Arthur ransome7/6/2023 ![]() Joyce married into the Lupton family, well-connected industrialists and politicians she named one of her sons Arthur Ralph Ransome Lupton (1924–2009). Arthur was the eldest of four children: he had two sisters Cecily and Joyce, and a brother Geoffrey who was killed in the First World War in 1918. Ransome was the son of Cyril Ransome (1851–1897) and his wife Edith Ransome (née Baker Boulton) (1862–1944). His connection with the leaders of the Revolution led to him providing information to the Secret Intelligence Service, while he was also suspected by MI5 of being a Soviet spy. ![]() ![]() He also wrote about the literary life of London, and about Russia before, during, and after the revolutions of 1917. The entire series remains in print, and Swallows and Amazons is the basis for a tourist industry around Windermere and Coniston Water, the two lakes Ransome adapted as his fictional North Country lake. He is best known for writing and illustrating the Swallows and Amazons series of children's books about the school-holiday adventures of children, mostly in the Lake District and the Norfolk Broads. Pivotal players bishop barron7/6/2023 ![]() Unfortunately, the asking price for that Trinnov processor is absurdly beyond my budget. ![]() The better solution is to install additional speakers in the center between the other height channels (Top Middle position). Those speakers are now fixed in place with wiring through the walls and ceiling, and I can’t move them without remodeling the room. This issue is compounded by the fact that the locations where I had installed speakers when I built the home theater (before immersive audio was a concern I gave any thought to) were less than ideal for Atmos. ![]() That, combined with a low ceiling, makes it difficult for just four speakers (two in the front of the room and two in the back) to image a sound above my head convincingly. My own home theater is a long room with a lot of space behind my seats. Nonetheless, for some of us, a limit of four height channels isn’t enough to fill the top of the room with sound. ![]()

Counting kisses by karen katz7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Of course girls have had to read guys' books since the dawn of time, so I personally wouldn't mind this at all. Since I'm currently looking for bedtime stories for a friend's little boy, I'm a little disappointed that this sweet book is so obviously geared towards girls. Good for babies' and toddlers' bedtime routines. This book reminds me of that: baby gets ten kisses on her toes and then we count down to that last, single kiss "on your sleepy, dreamy head." A lovely progression that starts with tickly, silly fun (because how could ten toe kisses not be tickly, silly fun?!), and ends with peaceful sleepy relaxation. ![]() You can start with your forehead and work your way down to your toes, or vice versa. There's a type of meditation practice that teaches you to methodically relax your entire body (and mind) by tightening, and then relaxing, one muscle group at a time. ![]()

When Uni's little girl visits the unicorn to excitedly tell her friend about her loose tooth and how she anticipates a visit from the Tooth Fairy, Uni reassures her that yes, there is such a thing. It might provide reassurance for youngsters who have a wiggly tooth ready to come out, of course. For me, the plot was too predictable, and the artwork just okay. Destroy me by tahereh mafi7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() I enjoyed Warner’s novella because Mafi took a character who was seemingly cold, hard, and ruthless and cracked him open, revealing a young man full of vulnerabilities and insecurities. You learn that his feelings for her didn’t begin when she walked through his door, but began way before. Through the journal she left behind, chronicling her time in the insane asylum, Warner begins to see how similarly situated he and Juliette are. In reality, Warner is just has screwed up as Juliette. ![]() I just about came out of my seat when Mafi starts to provide small backstories into some of the terrible things Warner had done in Shatter Me. What she saw in him is not who he really is. In Shatter Me, we saw Juliette’s perception of him, all of opinions are tainted by her own limited knowledge of his true intentions. Well, not different, per se but we are definitely seeing him from another perspective: his. In Destroy Me, Tahereh Mafi introduces you to a different Warner. Like I said in my Shatter Me review, I find Warner to be a more interesting character. Holy cannoli! Finally, I got inside Warner’s head. Thank you for supporting my blog! Lost names kim7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() The Andong Kwons were nobles, scholars, and advisors to the Korean Royal Family. ![]() With the monotonous chant of the monk echoing in the valley of the tombs, my father ceremoniously placed the box of ashes back into the earth, as was his filial duty.Īt the tombsite, the marble gravestone solemnly reads: “Andong Kwon Accumulated Tomb.” Andong is the area of Korea where our line of the Kwon family originates. ![]() Almost 50 years later, my father purchased a plot of land at Bukkokuji Temple in Kyoto where my grandfather’s ashes and bits of his larger bones rested in a wooden box wrapped in beige, polyester fabric. My father had always longed to return to Japan and bury my grandfather’s ashes in the traditional Buddhist way. My grandfather passed away in Japan in 1937 when my father was an infant, and my grandmother escaped with him to Korea to avoid being drafted into WWII as a nurse. Here is a story I wrote called “My Lost Names,” which was recently published in an anthology called Autobiography Matters: What’s in a Name? My Lost Namesĭuring a typical monsoon summer after my freshman year of college, my family took a trip to Japan so that my father could fulfill his lifelong dream of honoring the Kwon name by establishing a proper tomb for his father. Rosa Haewon Kim Kwon Easton? What kind of a name is that? It’s my full name, parts of which have been lost over time through immigration and marriage. ![]()
